The music video for Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box is full of disturbing imagery, and like many things Nirvana, surrounded by controversy.
The video opens with a scene of the band in hospital room, waiting on the recovery of a very thin old man. There is a fetus in the mans` IV, whose bed sits on a tiled floor with a black cross pattern. This man appears throughout the video on a cross wearing a Santa hat.
Other scenes show the band playing in a poppy field and hanging out in a small room with a bed with white stars covering the walls.
Many of the ideas in the video were based on imagery from Cobain`s dreams. One of the characters in the video is a young girl dressed in a white ku klux klan outfit, played by Kurt`s half-sister Brianne O`Conner. Many of these ideas were based on imagery from Cobain`s dreams.
Kevin Kerslake, who directed many of Nirvana`s other videos, was originally supposed to work on the video for Heart-Shaped Box. After the videos` release, Kerslake launched a lawsuit against the band for using his ideas. The lawsuit was later dropped after Cobain`s death.
Heart Shaped Box won Nirvana the MTV Music Video award for `Best Alternative Video` for the third time in a row in 1994.
