“This reissue of concert footage is a landmark for one reason: You get to see Kurt Cobain smile. From the group’s goth rendition of “Teen Spirit” on U.K. TV to Cobain and Dave Grohl slipping into drag for a concert in Brazil, it’s revelatory to see the man dubbed the tortured voice of a generation screwing around.” Full Review…

“There are some great performances captured on this DVD from the band’s native Seattle to Amsterdam, all recorded during the band’s early nineties peak. Originally released on VHS, the quality is often raw. Many of the performances here look grainy to the point that they may as well have been filmed on a Super 8 home movie camera. But that’s OK. In fact, it is probably exactly as it should be, in that it quite effectively captures the raw, minimal sort of feel of the time.” Full Review…

“”Live! Tonight! Sold Out!” covers Nirvana’s 1991/1992 tour, which I clearly remember standing out in line to get tickets for on one of the coldest days I think I’ve ever experienced in my lifetime. Although I don’t see concerts as much as I used to, the concert was certainly worth nearly losing fingers to frostbite. The concert documentary is taken from several shows during the tour (not mine, or I’d be looking for myself in the audience) and inserts footage from the band’s interviews and awards (”Headbanger’s Ball”, the MTV awards, foreign interviews, etc.) in-between songs. The concert presents a good selection from the band’s catalog and the performances are terrific; the clips in-between would be a bother in a different concert documentary, but here they give a good look at bits of Nirvana’s history.” Full Review…
